Greg Graziano is Albertina Wine Cellars's consulting winemaker.
The wines are made at Greg's production facility in Redwood
Valley, CA. Greg is the owner of Graziano Family of Wines
and has a tasting room in Hopland, CA.
Greg is one of the more talented winemakers in California.
He attended the University of California, Davis to study viticulture
and enology. He was the winemaker at La Crema in the mid-1980's
and has helped establish several Mendocino County wineries.
Fred and Greg discuss the aspects of making Albertina wines
very special. Each year, Fred and Greg taste the fruit in
the vineyard and decide when to pick. The fruit clusters are
allowed to hang on the vine for the longest possible time.
The grapes are hand-picked into small tubs at the peak of
ripeness. The grapes are crushed and fermented on the skins
until dry so that all the flavors and deep colors are extracted.
The wine is then pressed and aged for 20 months in small oak
barrels of French, American and Hungarian wood. This combination
of barrel types produce a unique flavor of wine. 40% of the
barrels are new with the remainder being neutral red barrels.
The wine has now been bottle-aged at least 12 months. Since
the wine is not over-oaked, and ripe clusters were picked,
the wine has a fruit-forward flavor with soft tannins, deep
colors and aroma, and loads of beneficial phenols. The wine
is drinkable immediately. Thanks to Greg's talents and effort,
the wine is delectable and engaging.
